Week 9 | 4.24.2024

Mason, Wynne combine to dive in 10 as Orioles crush Nationals, 20-4

Randy Mason went 4-for-4 and drove in six runs, and Travis Wynne went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs as the Orioles turned a close, 3-3, third-inning game into a 20-4 blowout over the Nationals Wednesday night at Heath Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Leading 8-4, but still within striking distance, the Orioles scored 12 runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. 

Winning pitcher: Kevin Vanzandt

Losing pitcher: Roland Fielder

Game MVPs: Randy Mason went 4-for-4 with six RBIs and two runs scored. Travis Wynne went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and one run scored. Johnny Tripp went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Ryan Carnwath went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. J.P. Whitford went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Kevin Vandandt pitched six innings, gave up four hits, two earned runs and three walks. He struck out five.

Noble Effort: Jesse Kenefic went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Jack Wu went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Ervin Jones went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. 

Miscellaneous Notes: The Orioles improve to 8-0 on the season. The Nationals fall 4-5 on the season.

Week 9 | 4.23.2024

Dodgers, Padres end with tie

The Dodgers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to escape with an 11-11 tie with the Padres Tuesday night at Heath Field in a game where they led 8-0 after four innings and out-hit the Padres 17-4.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the tie: Four walks, two batters hit by a pitch, three errors and one hit led to eight Padres runs in the top of the sixth inning. 

Winning pitcher: Matt Curtis

MVP pitcher: Jayson Melendez pitched the first five innings, and had to return for the seventh inning. Overall, he pitched six innings, gave up three hits, two earned runs, two walks and struck out 10.

Dodgers Game MVPs: Patrick Williams went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jayson Melendez went 2-for-5 with three RBIs ad a run scored. Rob Fravor went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Andy Schneider went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI. Alberto Sosa went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.  

Padres Game MVPs: Kelby Brooks went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Tomas Hernandez went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Justin Honda went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Alex Ventura went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. 

Miscellaneous Notes: The Dodgers left 15 runners on base, compared to four for the Padres.

Week 8 | 4.17.2024

Nationals pound out 15 hits, top Dodgers 7-4

The Nationals' offense pounded out 15 hits and its pitchers gave up only seven hits as the Nationals beat the Dodgers 7-4 Wednesday at Heath Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Leading 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Scott Shaffer drove in two runs and Ervin Jones drove in one run to give the Nationals a commanding lead

Winning pitcher: Matt Curtis

Losing pitcher: Doug Amerson

Game MVPs: Ervin Jones went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Scott Shaffer went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Jesse Kenefic went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Derek Sechrist went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Todd Hawkins went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Jack Wu went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.  

Noble Effort: Andy Schneider went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Doug Amerson went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Rob Fravor and Shannon Edwards each went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Johnny Prive went 2-for-2. 

Miscellaneous Notes: The Nationals improve to 4-4 on the season. The Dodgers fall to 1-6.

Week 8 | 4.16.2024

Cherry's four hits leads Orioles past Padres, 12-7

Brandon Cherry went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs and as the Orioles pounded out 18 hits in a 12-7 win over the Padres Tuesday at Heath Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: After the Padres closed the gap to 9-7, Brandon Cherry had a two-run single in the fifth inning and Travis Wynne launched a sacrifice fly to deep center field to give the Orioles a 12-7 cushion. 

Winning pitcher: Randy Mason

Losing pitcher: Mike Arico

Game MVPs: Brandon Cherry went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Johnny Brown went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Brian Edwards went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Randy Mason went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Travis Wynne pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings. He gave up two hits and struck out six.  

Noble Effort: Justin Honda went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Kelby Brooks went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Teddy Cardenas went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Johnny Price went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. 

Miscellaneous Notes: The Orioles improve to 7-0 on the season. The Padres fall to 3-5.

Week 7 | 4.10.2024

McLawhorn, Whitford lead Orioles to 7-3 win over Dodgers

Geoff McLawhorn drove in three runs and J.P Whitford pitched a complete game as the Orioles beat the Dodgers 7-3 Wednesday at Heath Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: With the scored tied at 1, Johnny Tripp singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch, Geoff McLawhorn drove in a run with a ground out and Brandon Cherry drove in a run with a double to take a 4-1 lead

Winning pitcher: J.P Whitford

Losing pitcher: Mike Gleason

Game MVPs: Geoff McLawhorn went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Randy Mason went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Travis Wynne walked four times and scored twice. Chris Drake went 1-for2. J.P. Whitford pitched six innings, gave up six hits, three runs and four walks while striking out seven. 

Noble Effort: Andre Perez went 1-for-2. Alex Bogdanoff went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Andy Schneider went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Patrick Williams went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Dodgers welcomed two 35-year-olds to the team in Patrick Williams and Alex Bogdanoff. Trey Bennet, also 35, will be joining the Dodgers next week. The youth movement is on.  The Orioles improve to 6-0. The Dodgers fall to 1-4.

Week 7 | 4.9.2024

Padres pound Nationals, 18-5, using 16 hits, 6 walks and an assortment of errors

Tomas Hernandez, Kelby Brooks and Mike Arico each drove in three runs, and Danny Nunez and Arico gave up seven hits and no earned runs as the Padres crushed the Nationals, 18-5, Tuesday night at Heath Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The Padres pounded out 16 hits, led from the start and were never threatened. 

Winning pitcher: Danny Nunez

Losing pitcher: Jack Wu

Game MVPs: Danny Nunez went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. He also pitched four innings, gave up four hits and five unearned runs. Mike Arico went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. He pitched three scoreless innings. Kelby Brooks went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Tomas Hernandez went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Johnny Price went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. 

Noble Effort: Scott Shaffer went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Derek Sechrist went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Roland Fielder, Ervin Jones, Jesse Kenefic and Joshua Monson each went 1-for-4.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Padres move to 2-4 on the season. The Nationals fall to 3-4. 

Week 6 | 4.15.2024  (originally schedule for 4.3.2024, but played 4.15.2024)

Ventura drives in four runs to leads Padres to 7-3 win over Dodgers

Alex Ventura drove in four runs and the Dodgers left the bases loaded three times as the Padres beat the Dodgers 7-3 Monday at Heath Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Kelby Brooks doubled in a run and Alex Ventura drove in two more to give the Padres a 4-0 lead in the first inning. 

Winning pitcher: Danny Nunez

Losing pitcher: Mike Gleason

Game MVPs: Tomas Hernandez went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Alex Ventura went 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Danny Nunez went 1-for-2 with three runs scored. Nunez pitched three innings, gave up five hits, two earned runs and two walks. He struck out four. 

Noble Effort: Alberto Sosa went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Michael Gleason and Jack Wu.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Dodgers left the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth innings. The Padres improve to 3-4. The Dodgers fall to 1-5. 

Week 6 | 4.2.2024

Cherry leads Orioles to win over Nationals, Orioles remain undefeated

Brandon Cherry went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs, and Travis Wynne and J.P. Whitford combined to hold the Nationals to five hits and three runs as the Orioles remained unbeaten with a 16-3 win Tuesday night at Heath Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Brandon Cherry and Jimmie Lee each had two-run singles in the first inning as the Orioles scored eight runs and set the tone for the game. 

Winning pitcher: Travis Wynne

Losing pitcher: Jack Wu

Game MVPs: Brandon Cherry went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scorred. J.P. Whitford went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Chris Drake went 1-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Dean Dobson went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. 

Noble Effort: Ervin Jones went 1-for-1 with two walks and two stolen bases. Jesse Kenefic went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Roland Fielder went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Orioles, now 5-0 on the season, left 13 runners on base, but cruised to a win behind eight runs in the first inning and six runs in the third inning. 

Week 5 | 3.27.2024

Vanzandt takes no-hitter into seventh, finished with 1-hit shutout of Padres

Kevin Vandandt no-hit the Padres for six innings and finished with a one-hit shutout, and Travis Wynne went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Orioles to a 5-0 win over the Padres Wednesday night at Heath Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Former youngster and ECABL Cy Young winner Kevin Vanzandt held the Padres hitless until Kelby Brooks led off the sixth inning with a line-drive single to center field. Vanzandt struck out eight and walked two. 

Winning pitcher: Kevin Vandandt

Losing pitcher: Mike Arico

Game MVPs: Vanzandt pitched a complete game shutout. He also went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Travis Wynne went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Brandon Cherry went 1-for-1 with a run scored. 

Noble Effort: Mike Arico pitched a complete game for the Padres. He struck out eight and walked two. Kelby Brooks went 1-for-2.

Miscellaneous Notes: Geoff McLawhorn had a triple to the fence in right field. He probably could have had a home run, but we'll never know because he stopped running.

Week 5 | 3.26.2024

Nationals take advantage of walks, errors for 17-8 win over Dodgers

The Nationals used 10 walks, six errors and 11 hits to score 17 runs to beat the Dodgers, 17-8 Tuesday night at Heath Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Ervin Jones singled twice in the fourth inning, drove in two runs and scored two runs as the Nationals scored eight to take a commanding lead. 

Winning pitcher: Jack Wu

Losing pitcher: Mike Gleason

Game MVPs: Ervin Jones went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Scott Shaffer went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Jack Wu went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. 

Noble Effort: Andre Perez went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored. Mike Gleason, Alberto Sosa and Andy Schneider each went 1-for-2.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Dodgers led 7-6 after three innings, but the floodgates opened in the fourth inning.

Week 4 | 3.20.2024

Wu hits inside-the-park-homer, drives in four to lead Nationals to 16-15 win

Jack Wu hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run in the second inning to give the Nationals an early lead, and the Nationals held on for a 16-15 win over the Padres Wednesday night at Cutler Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: A nine-run second inning, capped by Wu's line drive to right-center that reached the fence, propelled the Nationals to the win. 

Winning pitcher: Jack Wu

Losing pitcher: David Schifano

Game MVPs: Jack Wu went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Ervin Jones went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Scott Shaffer went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Heath Henson went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. 

Noble Effort: Tomas Hernandez went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Mike Arico and Alex Ventura went 2-for-5. Arico also pitched four innings, giving up three hits and no earned runs.

Miscellaneous Notes: Despite a lot of errors, the Padres made a game of it. The game ended with the tying run stranded on third base.

Wynne leads Orioles to 15-7 win over Nationals

Travis Wynne went 2-for-2 and scored four runs, and he struck out eight in four innings to lead the Orioles to a 15-7 win over the Nationals Wednesday night at Cutler Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: With two outs, an RBI-single by Chris Drake, an RBI-double by Kevin Vandandt and a two-run double by Johnny Brown scored four runs in an eight-run third inning for the Orioles

Winning pitcher: Travis Wynne

Losing pitcher: Jack Wu

Game MVPs: Travis Wynne went 2-for-2, scored four runs and had two RBIs. He also pitched four innings, gave up two hits, three walks and no earned runs while striking out eight. Randy Mason went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Johnny Brown went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Chris Drake went 2-for-3 and Brandon Cherry went 2-for-4.

Noble Effort: Ervin Jones went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Jesse Kenefic went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Miscellaneous Notes: Both teams left eight runners on base. The Orioles offense out-hit the Nationals, 15-3.

Week 3 | 3.12.2024

Walks, timely hitting lead Dodgers to 16-11 win over Padres

Rick Castro drove in three runs and the Dodgers took advantage of 12 walks and timely hitting to beat the Padres, 16-11, Tuesday night at Cutler field.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The Dodgers scored seven runs in the fifth inning on five hits and four walks to cap their scoring. 

Winning pitcher: Mike Gleason

Losing pitcher: Danny Nunez

Game MVPs: Rick Castro went 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored. Andy Schneider went 2-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI. Jimmie Lee went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI. Alberto Sosa went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. 

Noble Effort: Tomas Hernandez went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Danny Nunez went 3-for-3 with four runs scored. Gene Shackley and Brian Edwards each went 1-for-3.

Miscellaneous Notes: There are five players in the league who are 60 or older. All of them played in this game. Four for the Dodgers and one for the Padres.

Orioles show up ... win ... and then put a hurtin' on the Padres

The Orioles won by forfeit on Thursday night because the Padres did not have enough rostered players, but the two teams played, and the Orioles pounded the Padres 15-0 behind 16 hits and a shortened complete game shutout from J.P. Whitford.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Overcoming injuries and scheduling conflicts by the Orioles, and Dave on the Padres coming down with the flu. And the 3-for-3 by Kevin Vanzandt didn't hurt either. 

Winning pitcher: J.P. Whitford

Losing pitcher: Tomas Hernandez

Game MVPs: Kevin Vandandt went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Geoff McLawhorn went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs.  J.P. Whitford went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Whitford pitched five innings, gave up three hits and no runs, while striking out two. 

Noble Effort: Johnny Price and Alex Ventura went 1-for-2. Tomas Hernandez went 1-for-3.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Orioles have started the season at 3-0. The Padres, Nationals and Dodgers are each 1-2.

Week 2 | 3.11.2024  (Originally scheduled for 3.5.2024)

Nationals deal Dodgers 19-8 loss

The Nationals pounded out 20 hits and the Dodgers's defense did its pitchers no favors as the Nationals pounded the Dodgers, 19-8, Monday night at Creekside Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Leading 3-0 going into the fifth inning, the Nationals had eight singles and a double to score eight runs and take a commanding lead. 

Winning pitcher: Jack Wu

Losing pitcher: Doug Amerson

Game MVPs: Scott Shaffer, Heath Henson, Roland Fielder and Todd Hawkins each had three hits for the Nationals. Jack Wu pitched five innings and gave up five earned runs. 

Noble Effort: Andy Schneider and Rick Castro each went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and one run scored. Doug Amerson pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up four earned runs.

Miscellaneous Notes: The game was originally scheduled for March 5 at Cutler field, but field conditions postponed the game.

Orioles deliver crushing blow to Dodgers, open season with 17-1 win

Brian Edwards and J.P. Whitford each drove in three runs, and three Orioles pitchers held the Dodgers to one unearned run as the Orioles crushed the Dodgers, 17-1.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Leading 5-1 going into the third inning, the Orioles batted around and scored nine in the third inning, putting the game out of reach. 

Winning pitcher: Kevin Vanzandt

Losing pitcher: Doug Amerson

Game MVPs: Pitchers Kevin Vandandt, J.P. Whitford and Travis Wynne held the Dodgers to seven hits and no earned runs. Brian Edwards, Randy Mason and Kevin Vanzandt each had three hits for the Orioles

Noble Effort: Doug Amerson went 1-for-2 and Shannon Edwards and Stephen Billings each went 1-for-2.

Miscellaneous Notes: The ECABL instituted a mercy rule this season -- a 15-run lead after five innings. With this win, the Orioles were the first team to win by mercy rule.

Padres kick off 2024 season with 10-1 win over Nationals

Dave Schifano gave up one run over three innings, Daniel Nunez pitched three shutout innings and Tomas Hernandez pitched one scoreless inning as the Padres cruised to a 10-1 win over the Nationals to open the 35+ Division 2024 season.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Alex Ventura, Johnny Price and Dave Schifano each singled to start a second-inning, five-run rally to give the Padres a 6-1 lead. 

Winning pitcher: Dave Schifano

Losing pitcher: Jack Wu

Game MVPs: Dave Schifano went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Alex Ventura went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Justin Honda went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Danny Nunez pitched four innings. He gave up two hits and two walks while striking out three.

Noble Effort: Ervin Jones went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Derek Sechrist went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Scott Shaffer went 1-for-3.
