McLawhorn, Tripp drive in 10 to lead Orioles in rout over Padres

Geoff McLawhorn homered and drove in six runs, and Johnny Tripp homered and drove in four runs as the Orioles pounded the Padres, 20-7.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Geoff McLawhorn hit a grand slam in the first inning and the Orioles never looked back. 

Winning pitcher: Kevin Vanzandt

Losing pitcher: Mike Arico

Game MVPs: Geoff McLawhorn went 2-for-2 with six RBIs and two runs scored. Johnny Tripp went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Chris Drake went 2-for-2 with four runs scored. Brian Edwards and Casey Wright each went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Noble Effort: Tomas Hernandez went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Justin Honda went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kelby Brooks, David Hackney, Dave Schifano and David Eckberg each went 1-for-3.

Miscellaneous Notes: Kevin Vandandt pitched six innings, gave up seven hits and two earned runs for the win. He struck out seven and walked two.

Nationals take early lead, hold on for 13-11 win over Dodgers

The Nationals scored eight-first-innings runs and held on for the win as the Dodgers chipped away at the lead but fell just short.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Marcus Clifton drive in four runs in the first inning with a double and a single as the Nationals batted around the order to score eight runs. 

Winning pitcher: Jack Wu

Game MVPs: Marcus Clifton went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Alberto Sosa went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Alex Ventura 3-fo-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jack Wu went 3-for-4 with two RBIs ad a run scored. Scott Shaffer went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Noble Effort: Rob Fravor went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Wayne Brown went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Steve Billings, Teddy Cardenas and John Peterson went 2-for-4.

Miscellaneous Notes: Jack Wu pitched 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win.

Nationals come from behind, take advantage of errors for 11-8 win over Padres

Alex Vizcarrondo and Marcus Clifton each drove in two runs, and the Nationals' offense took advantage of five errors to score seven unearned runs and defeat the Padres, 11-8, Tuesday night at Kafer Park

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The Nationals scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead. From there, they never trailed again. 

Winning pitcher: Alex Vizcarrondo

Losing pitcher: David Schifano

Game MVPs: Alex Vizcarrondo went 2-for-3 wit two RBIs. He also pitched a complete game, giving up 12 hits and six earned runs. He struck out two and walked two. Geoff McLawhorn went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Noble Effort: Kelby Brooks went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. He gave the Padres their first lead with a three-run home run in the first inning. Justin Honda went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Tomas Hernandez went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Padres out-hit the Nationals, but they could not overcome the walks and errors of their defense.

The Orioles defeated the Dodgers by forfeit because the Dodgers did not have enough rostered players.

Week 10 | 9.20.2023

Padres take early lead, hold on for 16-12 win over Dodgers

Dave Schifano, Kelby Brooks and Justin Honda each drove in three runs to lead the Padres to a 16-12 win over the Dodgers Wednesday night at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The Padres jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of three walks and four hits. When the Dodgers made a run in the fourth inning, the Padres answered back with four runs in the sixth inning to preserve the lead

Winning pitcher: Gene Shackley

Losing pitcher: Wayne Brown

Game MVPs: Dave Schifano and Justin Honda each went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Kelby Brooks went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. David Hackney went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Danny Nunez went 1-for-2 with three runs scored.

Noble Effort: Wayne Brown went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Rob Fravor went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Doug Amerson went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Dodgers out-hit the Padres 16-14, and the Padres walked more batters 10-8. But the Dodgers left 13 runners on base, compared to six for the Padres.

Orioles come out on top of back-and-forth game with 12-11 win over Nationals

Travis Wynne and Chris Drake each had RBI doubles in a seven-run fifth inning that helped the Orioles to a 12-11 win over the Nationals Tuesday night at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Errors played a big part in the game, but each team made their share. The Orioles' lineup out-hit the Nationals 15-9, and struck those hits together to do the most damage. 

Winning pitcher: Kevin Vanzandt

Losing pitcher: Alex Vizcarrondo

Game MVPs: Brian Edwards went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Randy Mason went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Travis Wynne went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Chris Drake, Marshall Watson, Kevin Vanzandt and Geoff McLawhorn each went 2-for-4.

Noble Effort: Ervin Jones went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Alex Ventura went 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Alberto Sosa went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Miscellaneous Notes: Both teams will play again Thursday night in a game that was postponed from earlier this season due to rain.

Brown's 5 hits lead Dodgers to 14-10 win over Nationals

Wayne Brown went 5-for-5 and scored three runs as the Dodgers beat the Nationals, 14-10, Tuesday night at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The Dodgers took an early lead, but broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring six runs, taking advantage of five hits and one error to do the damage

Winning pitcher: Teddy Cardenas

Losing pitcher: Alex Vizcarrondo

Game MVPs: Wayne Brown went 5-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Teddy Cardenas went 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Alex Ventura went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Noble Effort: Jesse Kenefic went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Alberto Sosa went 2-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI. Ervin Jones went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Alex Vizcarrondo went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Todd Hawkins and Tomas Hernandez each went 2-for-4.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Dodgers took advantage of several errors to score runs, but still managed to leave nine runners stranded on base.

Wynne, McLawhorn power Orioles past Dodgers, 15-2

Travis Wynne and Geoff McLawhorn each homered, and the Orioles had 22 hits to pound the Dodgers into submission, 15-2, Tuesday night at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: J.P. Whitford had four hits and four players has three hits for the Orioles. They swiung the bats and they hit the ball.

Game MVPs: J.P. Whitford went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Daniel Bland went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Travis Wynne went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Geoff McLawhorn went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Noble Effort: Alex Ventura went 1-for-2 and Wayne Brown went 1-for-4.

Honda drives in three, Arico tosses complete game as Padres top Nationals, 9-4

Justin Honda had three hits and drove in three runs, and Mike Arico held the Nationals to two earned runs over seven innings, as the Padres topped the Nationals 9-4, Wednesday night at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The game was tight until the fifth inning, when the Padres capitalized on five walks, an error and one hit to score 6 runs to secure the game.

Winning pitcher: Mike Arico

Losing pitcher: Richard D'Elia

Game MVPs: Justin Honda went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored. Alex Ventura went 1-for-3 with three runs scored. Mike Arico went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Arico also gave up 10 hits and two earned runs over seven innings. He struck out four and walked three.

Noble Effort: Rick Castro went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Alberto Sosa went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Ervin Jones went 1-for-2.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Nationals out-hit the Padres, but they left 11 runners on base.

Brown, Fravor lead Dodgers over Padres, 15-14

Wayne Brown went 3-for-4 and scored three runs, and the Dodgers held on for a 15-14 win over the Padres Tuesday night at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: After two-run homers by Kelby Brooks and Justin Honda to tie the score, Rob Fravor drove in the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning. 

Winning pitcher: Doug Amerson

Losing pitcher: Justin Honda

Game MVPs: Wayne Brown went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Doug Amerson went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Teddy Cardenas went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs..

Noble Effort: Alex Ventura went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Justin Honda went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Kelby Brooks went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Miscellaneous Notes: Rain threatened for the entire game. The game was postponed for 30 minutes due to lightening.

Scoreboard, box score deceiving - Orioles win by forfeit over Nationals

Despite a scoreboard that read that the Nationals won 12-11 over the Orioles, the Orioles won by forfeit because the Nationals did not have enough rostered players for the game.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Business travel and impending storms cause at least two Nationals players to miss the game. Life events prevented others from playing, giving the Orioles the win. Neither team had their usual starters on the field, but the Nationals put together more hits and took advantage of more walks to squeak out a "victory."

"Losing pitcher": Lee Wilson

Game MVPs: Marcus Clifton and Tomas Hernandez each went 3-for-5. Heath Henson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Todd Hawkins went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs and Scott Shaffer went 1-for-3 with three runs scored.

Noble Effort: Kevin Vanzandt went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Daniel Bland went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Lee Wilson went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Miscellaneous Notes: Jack Wu tossed a complete game for the Nationals. Because the game is an official forfeit, stats from the game will not be entered into the team or league stats.

Hawkins drives in five to lead Nationals to dominating 18-9 win over Dodgers

Todd Hawkins went 4-for-6 and drove in five runs to lead the Nationals to an 18-9 win over the Dodgers Wednesday night at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The Nationals had 18 hits, and when you combine that with six Dodgers' errors, the result is 18 runs and an easy win. 

Winning pitcher: Jack Wu

Losing pitcher: Doug Amerson

Game MVPs: Todd Hawkins went 4-for-6 with five RBIs and a run scored. Ervin Jones went 3-for-6 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Jack Wu went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Noble Effort: There was nothing noble about the Dodgers' effort.

Miscellaneous Notes: Jack Wu pitched four innings, gave up four hits and three runs. He walked one and did not strike out a batter.

Edwards, Wynne homer to power Orioles to 15-2 win over Padres

Brian Edwards hit a grand slam in the third inning and Travis Wynne hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning as the Orioles pounded the Padres, 15-2, Tuesday night at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The Orioles scored nine runs in the third inning, capped off by a grand slam by Brian Edwards. 

Winning pitcher: Jamie Byers

Losing pitcher: Gene Shackley

Game MVPs: Brian Edwards went 2-for-4 with six RBIs and a run scored. Travis Wynne went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Randy Mason went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Noble Effort: Gene Shackley went 1-for-2. David Eckberg went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Johnny Price went 1-for-3.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Padres had chances to score, but left 11 men on base. Four Orioles pitchers combined to give up one earned run and three hits over six innings.

Orioles pound out 21 hits enroute to 17-2 win over Dodgers

Geoff McLawhorn drove in four runs, and Travis Wynne held the Dodgers to three hits as the Orioles clubbed the Dodgers, 17-2, Wednesday at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: J.P. Whitford's two-run single and Geoff McLawhorn's two-run double in the second inning helped the Orioles score six runs and take a 7-0 lead and were never threatened the rest of the way.

Losing pitcher: Teddy Cardenas

Game MVPs: Geoff McLawhorn was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Brian Edwards was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Daniel Bland was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Noble Effort: Teddy Cardenas and Rick Castro went 1-for-2 and John Peterson went 1-for-1.

Miscellaneous Notes: Travis Wynne pitched five innings and gave up three hits and two earned runs. He walked six and struck out four.

Nationals survive disastrous first inning to beat Padres, 17-15

When the Padres scored 10 runs in the first inning, the Nationals looked prime for a beat-down. But the Nationals chipped away at the lead with four runs in the first inning, five in the second inning and six in the fourth inning to tied the score. They turned the tables on the Padres and scored two for the win in the fifth inning.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Pitching was not a strong point for either team, but Roland Fielder, making his first pitching appearance, tossed two no-hit innings and picked up the win. 

Winning pitcher: Roland Fielder

Losing pitcher: Mike Arico

Game MVPs: Marcus Clifton went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Alberto Sosa went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Ervin Jones went 2-for-2 with four runs scored. Geoff McLawhorn went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Noble Effort: Bobby Leverett went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Alex Ventura went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Danny Nunez, Tomas Hernandez and Justin Honda each went 2-for-4.

Miscellaneous Notes: Wind played a small part, but misplayed balls in the outfield for both teams led to several runs.

Cardenas holds Padres in check, Dodgers win 11-7

Teddy Cardenas held the Padres to six hits and one earned run, and Doug Amerson hit two doubles and drove in two runs as the Dodgers beat the Padres, 11-7, Wednesday night at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The Dodgers had 11 hits, but they also took advantage of several errors to build an 11-3 lead going into the seventh inning. 

Winning pitcher: Teddy Cardenas

Losing pitcher: Mike Arico

Game MVPs: Teddy Cardenas pitched seven innings, gave up six hits, three walks and one earned run. He struck out six. Cardenas also went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Doug Amerson went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Rob Fravor went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Noble Effort: Mike Arico went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Alex Ventura went 2-for-3.

Miscellaneous Notes: Only four of the 11 runs given up by Arico were earned runs.

Orioles, Nationals battle to second tie of the night.

Is it lucky No. 7 or unlucky No. 7? I guess it depends how you look at it. The same two teams completed a previously postponed game earlier in the night, and finished that game with a 7-7 tie. This game ended two hours later, but with the same result -- a 7-7 tie -- after a big comeback by the Nationals, Tuesday night at Kafer Park

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the tie: The Orioles held a 7-1 lead going into the fifth inning. Because of time restraints, the fifth inning was going to be the final inning. The Nationals took advantage of six walks and no hits to score six runs and tie the game

Winning pitcher: None

Losing pitcher: None

Game MVPs: Daniel Bland went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Lee Wilson went 2-for-3. Brian Edwards, J.P. Whitford, Chris Drake and Geoff McLawhorn each collected a hit. Marcus Clifton and Tomas Hernandez each went 1-for-1. Elex Vizcarrondo and Johnny Price also collected hits.

Noble Effort: Alberto Sosa pitched three innings of relief, giving up four hits, two walks and one earned run, while striking out two.

Miscellaneous Notes: Six walks, two errors and a batter hit by a pitch in the fifth inning led to six runs for the Nationals.

Week 3 | 8.2.2023

Orioles win slugfest, 15-10, over Padres

The Orioles pounded out 20 hits and held the Padres to three earned runs to come away with a 15-10 win over the Padres Wednesday night at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The Orioles scored three runs in the fourth inning on four consecutive hits to take a 5-2 lead, and the Padres never came closer than one run the rest of the way. 

Winning pitcher: Kevin Vanzandt

Losing pitcher: Mike Arico

Game MVPs: Chris Drake went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored. Geoff McLawhorn went 3-for-6 with a home run, two RBIS and two runs scored. J.P Whitford went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Daniel Bland went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Noble Effort: Dave Schifano went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kelby Brooks went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Alex Ventura went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Miscellaneous Notes: Both teams left 12 runners on base.

The Nationals win by forfeit because the Dodgers did not have enough rostered players in the game. The two teams played a scrimmage, as a result.

The Padres won the game by forfeit because the Nationals did not have enough rostered players in the game.

The Orioles won the game by forfeit because the Dodgers did not have enough rostered players in the game. The two teams played with additional taxi players, and the Orioles won, 9-7.

Week 1 | 7.19.2023

Continued game ends in tie

Lightening and rain postponed this game on July 19 with the scored tied at 4, and nearly a month later and four innings deeper into the game, it still ended in a tie. The two teams each added three runs over four more innings and ran out of time after seven innings.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the tie: The Nationals took a two-run lead in the fourth inning, but the Orioles responded with two runs in the top of the fifth. When the Nationals took a one-run lead in the bottom of the fifth, the Orioles responded with a run in the sixth.

Losing pitcher: None

Game MVPs: Chris Drake went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. J.P. Whitford went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Ervin Jones went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Johnny Price went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. 

Noble Effort: Travis Wynne pitched three innings, giving up three hits and four walks, while only allowing one run. Alex Vizcarrono pitched seven innings and gave up three earned runs.

Miscellaneous Notes: The was postponed on July 19 due to lightening and rain. The scored was 4-4 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.

7-run sixth inning leads Padres to, 11-10, comeback win over Dodgers

Trailing through five innings, the Padres scored seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 11-5 lead, and despite giving up five runs in the bottom of the inning, managed to hang on for the 11-10 win.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Four walks, four hits and a couple of errors lead to seven runs in the fifth inning, giving the Padres an 11-5 lead.  The Padres gave up five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but held on for the win. 

Winning pitcher: Mike Arico

Losing pitcher: Rick Castro

Game MVPs: Mike Arico went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kelby Brooks wet 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Gary Fanin went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Noble Effort: Rob Fravor, Steve Billings and Rick Castro each went 3-for-4. Doug Amerson pitched five innings, gave up eight hits and two earned runs.

Miscellaneous Notes: The game went six innings due to "time constraints."
