Calabrese tosses three-hitter; Mets top A's, wins third straight

The Mets scored 13 runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 13-1 win over the A's behind Alex Calabrese three-hitter, Sunday at Creekside Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Alex Calabrese struck out 11 and gave up three hits and one run while tossing his sixth complete game of the season.

Winning pitcher: Alex Calabrese

Losing pitcher: Andrew Johnson

Game MVPs: Alex Calabrese pitched seven innings, giving up three hits and one run. He struck out 11 and walked four. Calabrese also went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Alden Manning went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Dan Ventry went 2-for-3 with a runs scored and and RBI. Brandon Bowden went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. 

Noble Effort: Alberto Sosa went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Thomas Masten went 1-for-3.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Mets do not play this weekend because of the holiday. The A's will play the Cardinals in a game postponed from earlier this season

4-run fifth inning completes Cardinals come-from-behind win over Marlins

Malik Dixon doubled and scored in the fifth inning, and Ray Hower and Victor Medina each delivered RBI singles to lead the Cardinals to an 11-7 win over the Marlins on Sunday at Creekside Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Justin Strickland tossed a complete game, giving up one earned run while striking out seven.

Game MVPs: Malik Dixon went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Victor Medina went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Ray Hower went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. 

Noble Effort: Danny Nunez went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Dario Caballo went 2-for-4. Alex Ventura went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Marlins do not play this weekend because of the holiday. The Cardinals will play the A's in a game postponed from earlier this season. 

Week 8 | 10.29.2023

A's win despite deceiving scoreboard

The A's scored nine runs in the top of the sixth innings to take a 9-8 lead, but the Cardinals came back with two in the bottom of the inning for the deceiving win. What the scoreboard didn't know was that the Cardinals did not have enough of their own rostered players to make it an official game, so the A's won by forfeit, despite the entertaining game result.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: A long baseball season and personal events that kept players off the field for the Cardinals. But Justin Strickland went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs for the Cardinals.

Noble Effort: Alberto Sosa went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Duane Johnson went 1-for-3, Alden Manning went 1-for-2 and Richard D'Elia went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Mets walk-off, hand Marlins first defeat of fall

Connor Alvarado singled to right field and Brandon Bowden scored all the way from first base when the ball got past the right fielder, giving the Mets a 4-3, walk-off win over the Marlins Sunday at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Alex Calabrese held the Marlins to eight hits and three runs while tossing a complete game for the win.

Winning pitcher: Alex Calabrese

Losing pitcher: Shaian Geronimo

Game MVPs: Alex Calabrese gave up eight hits and three earned runs in seven innings. He struck out 11 and walked four. Bill Little went 2-for-2 with two home runs. Alden Manning went 2-for-4. Jesse Kenefic went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Brandon Bowden and Connor Alvarado each went 1-for-3.

Noble Effort: Matt Cartwright tossed six innings and gave up eight hits and three earned runs. He struck out eight and walked four. Cartwright and Tomas Hernandez each went 1-for-3. Shaian Geronimo went 3-for-4.

Bowden drives in four, Calabrese pitches shutout to lead Mets over Cardinals

Alex Calabrese tossed a shutout and struck out 10, and Brandon Bowden drove in four runs as the Mets clubbed the Cardinals, 9-0, Sunday at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Brandon Bowden's three-run double in the third inning helped the Mets to a 6-0 lead after three innings, and Alex Calabrese allowed only four hits in pitching a complete game shutout.

Winning pitcher: Alex Calabrese

Losing pitcher: Justin Strickland

Game MVPs: Brandon Bowden went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Alex Calabrese pitched seven innings, gave hits and no earned runs. He struck out 10 and walked two. Travis Morton went 1-for-2 with a solo home run.

Noble Effort: Nick Hoffman went 2-for-3. Malik Dixon went 1-for-1. TJ Eina went 1-for-3.

Miscellaneous Notes: Alex Calabrese pitched his fourth complete game.

A's out-hit Marlins, but Marlins come out on top with 10-7 win


Shaian Geronimo and Adrian Perez each drove in two runs, and Matt Williams held the A's to three earned runs as the Marlins beat the A's, 10-7, Sunday at Kafer Park.


HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The Marlins had only four hits, but they took advantage of six walks and some errors to score nine unearned runs. They took an early lead and held on for the win.

Game MVPs: Shaian Geronimo went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Adrian Perez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. TJ Eina went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Matt Williams pitched seven innings, gave up eight hits and three earned runs. He struck out eight and walked three.

Noble Effort: Andrew DElia, Duane Johnson and Matt Curtis each went 2-for-4. Dom Totten went 1-for-3. Andrew Johnson pitched seven innings and gave up four hits. He struck out seven and walked six.

Miscellaneous Notes: Of the 10 runs Andrew Johnson gave up, only one was earned.

Thomas' two homers, Curtis' two-hitter lead A's to 5-1 win over Mets

Dakotah Thomas drove in five runs with two home runs, and Matt Curtis struck out 14 batters while throwing a complete game as the A's topped the Mets 5-1, Sunday at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Dakotah Thomas hit a two-run home run in the first inning and a three-run home run in the third inning to lead the A's offense.

Winning pitcher: Matt Curtis

Losing pitcher: Alex Calabrese

Game MVPs: Dakotah Thomas went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Alberto Sosa went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Matt Curtis pitched seven innings and gave up two hits and one run. He struck out 14 and didn't walk a batter.

Noble Effort: Alex Calabrese pitched six innings and gave up eight hits and five runs. He struck out 12 and walked two. Alden Manning and Jesse Kenefic each went 1-for-3.

Miscellaneous Notes: This was a pitchers' battle, and the pitchers were helped by "the wind."

Thomas, Vergerano give Marlins early lead; Cardinals fall short in comeback

Dakotah Thomas hit a three-run home run in the second inning, and Xavier Vergerano had a two-run single in the fourth inning as the Marlins topped the Cardinals, 7-6, Sunday at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Blake Ellis was thrown out at third base trying to advance on a wild pitch.

Winning pitcher: Devin Hazell

Losing pitcher: Justin Strickland

Game MVPs: Dakotah Thomas went 1-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Xavier Vergerano went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Devin Hazell gave up four runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Noble Effort: T.J. Eina went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Victor Medina went 1-for-4 with three RBIs and Malik Dixon went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Cardinals scored three runs in the fifth inning and two in the seventh inning to come within a run of the Marlins, but the comeback fell short.

Vergerano hits grand slam, drives in five to lead Marlins over Mets, 14-8

Xavier Vergerano clubbed a sixth-inning grand slam to lead the Marlins to a 14-8 win over the Mets Sunday at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The Mets kept the game close and came with within a run in the top of the sixth inning. But with the Marlins leading 8-7 with one out and the bases loaded, Vergerano drove the ball over the left-center field fence for a grand slam.

Winning pitcher: Matt Williams

Losing pitcher: Alex Calabrese

Game MVPs: Xavier Vergerano went 4-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Dario Carballo went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Justin Honda went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Noble Effort: Jesse Kenefic went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Alex Calabrese went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Brandon Bowden, Duane Johnson and Scott Shaffer each went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Marlins take early lead, but A's come back and manage a tie

The Marlins took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the A's scored a run in the second and two in the seventh to come away with a tie.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the game: Jack Wu and Andrew DElia scored in the seventh inning to tie score and help the A's salvage a tie with the Marlins.

Key pitchers: Andre DElia and Matt Curtis held the Marlins to three hits, and they stuck out 13. Devin Hazell struck out 10 over six innings.

Game MVPs: Dario Carballo went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Juston Honda went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Tomas Hernandez went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Andrew Johnson went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Dom Totten went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Duane Johnson went 1-for-2.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Marlins left eight runners on base, compared to four for the A's.

Dixon drives in four as Cardinals hold on for 13-12 win over Mets

Malik Dixon led off the game with a home run and drove in four runs as the Cardinals took a big early lead and held on for a 13-12 win over the Mets.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The Cardinals used a combination of hits and errors to score eight uns in the first inning. While the Mets chipped away at the lead over the course of the game, the Cardinals held on for the win.

Winning pitcher: Blake Ellis

Losing pitcher: Alex Calabrese

Game MVPs: Malik Dixon went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Blake Ellis went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Ryan Lewis went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored. Justin Strickland went 2-for-5 and Patrick Pipkin went 2-for-4.

Noble Effort: Gage Bohmuller went 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Spencer Hughes went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Alex Calabrese went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Alden Manning went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Mets left 13 runners on base.

Calabrese, Bohmuller lead Mets in walk-off win over A's

Alex Calabrese gave up one unearned run and pitched his seventh complete game of the season, and the Mets scored the winning run on a walk-off error in the bottom of the seventh for a 2-1 win over the A's.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Alex Calabrese gave up three hits and one unearned run in seven innings. Calabrese had a no-hitter through four innings and a shutout through six innings.

Winning pitcher: Alex Calabrese

Losing pitcher: Roland Fielder

Game MVPs: Gage Bohmuller hit a solo home run in the second inning. Travis Morton went 2-for-2 and Heath Henson went 1-for-3.

Noble Effort: Dom Totten went 1-for-2 and both Andrew Johnson and Thomas Masten went 1-for-3. Andrew D'Elia gave up four hits and one earned run in five innings.

Miscellaneous Notes: The Mets began the season with five straight losses, but won their final four games. Calabrese had seven consecutive complete games to end the season.

Marlins jump out early, cruise to easy 11-8 win over Cardinals

The Marlins jumped out to a six-run lead in the first inning and were really never in threat of losing the game, coming away with an 11-8 win over the Cardinals Sunday at Creekside Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: The Marlins used five walks, a hit batter and three hits to score six runs in the first inning.

Winning pitcher: Matthew Cartwright

Losing pitcher: Justin Strickland

Game MVPs: Devin Hazell went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Danny Nunez, Dario Carballo and Adrian Perez each went 1-for-2.

Noble Effort: Malik Dixon went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Eddy Torres went 3-for-3 with two with a solo home run, two runs scored and an RBI.

Dixon's grand slam, Strickland's pitching leads Cardinals to easy, 22-7, win over A's

Malik Dixon hit a grand slam in a 9-run fifth inning, and Justin Strickland had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning as the Cardinals topped the A's 22-7, Sunday at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Justin Strickland cruised into the fifth inning with a no-hitter and a 20-0 lead.

Losing pitcher: Duane Johnson

Game MVPs: Strickland pitched 5 2/3 innings, gave up three hits, three walks and no earned runs. He struck out seven. He also went 2-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI. Malik Dixon went 2-for-6 with a home run, five RBIs and one run scored. Ray Hower went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored.  TJ Eina went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Eight walks, three errors and 12 Marlins hits lead to 19 runs, as the Marlins coasted to a 19-5 win over the Mets Sunday at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Matt Williams went five innings and gave up four hits and two earned runs. He struck out four and walked four.

Key to the win: Dario Carballo's RBI-double and Adrian Perez's RBI-single helped the Marlins score four tuns in the sixth inning to take a 7-4 lead.

Dixon drives in four to lead Cardinals over Mets, 7-4

Malik Dixon went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs to lead the Cardinals to a 7-4, season-opening win over the Mets, Sunday at Kafer Park.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key to the win: Back-to-back doubles by Malik Dixon and Pablo Hernandez, followed by a single by Victor Medina led to four Cardinals runs to give them a 4-1, third-inning lead.

Winning pitcher: Elijah Wakeford-Smith

Losing pitcher: Alex Calabrese

Game MVPs: Malik Dixon went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Pablo Hernandes went 2-for-4 with an RBI and and a run scored. Victor Medina went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
