Braves, Orioles play to season-opening, rain-shortened tie

Board votes to keep tie but address rain out rule

Sam Lee crossed the plate to tie the score moments before the rain turned Kafer Park into a water park, as the Braves and Orioles played to a rain-shortened, season-opening 7-7 tie Sunday.

Anthony Sirici reached on an error to lead off the top of the seventh inning. Lee grounded to second, forcing Sirici out at second base. An errant pick-off attempt put Lee and third, and Lee scored on a Braves miscue to tie the score.

The Orioles jumped out to a commanding 4-0 lead in the first inning on two hits and three walks off Braves' starter Joe Edreira. The big hit of the inning was a two-out double by J.P. Whitford.

The Braves scored a run in the bottom of the first. Jesse Small reached on an error, stole second and move to third on a ground out by Alberton Sosa. Small scored on Patrick Pipkin's grounder to first.

The Orioles tacked on two more runs in the third inning when Sirici walked and Lee hit a two-run homer over the right-centerfield fence.

The Braves scored four in the third inning on four walks and two errors. Whitford relieved starter Kevin Vanzandt and got Sosa to hit into a fielder's choice and struck out Pipkin to end the inning.

The Braves added two runs in the fifth inning on three hits and a walk off reliever Parker Mills. The big blow was a two-out, two-run single by Mike Gleason.

The Orioles tied the score in the top of the seventh and the Braves did not bat in the bottom of the seventh. The ECABL board is currently discussing its postponement rule to address this and future situations like it.

Update: The board voted. The game ends in a tie.
