Game Summaries

Summaries of all ECABL games will be posted each week following the games. Managers are encouraged to submit information in great detail, along with photos, so that more extensive summaries can be posted.

Week 4: 6.28.2020

Pirates slug Orioles, 13-4, to pull into first-place tie

Ben Meinjohans struck out 10 in five innings and Xander Vizcarrondo hit a grand slam to lead the Pirates to a 13-4 win over the Orioles to move into a first-place tie in the East Carolina Amateur Baseball League standings.

Alex Vizcarrondo came on in relief and struck out twp as the game was called due to time.

Austin Zehr started on the mound for the Orioles and gave up a first-inning grand slam to Xander Vizcarrondo. J.P. Whitford relieved Zehr in the third inning and limited the damage. Josh Edwards went the rest of the way, giving up one run.

The Pirates scored four in the first inning, one in the second, seven in the third and one in the sixth.

Jaren Vizcarrondo went 4-for-4 with three singles, a double, three stolen bases and a run scored. Lemuel Vizcarrondo went 1-for-1 with a single, two walks and three stolen bases.

Zehr, Anthony Sireci, Brandon Cherry and Glenn Weatherly all went 2-for-3. Randy Mason went 2 for 3 with a solo homerun.

The Orioles, 3-1, will host the Braves at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 12. There are no games next week as the league observes the July 4th holiday. The Pirates, 3-1, will visit the Yankees at 7 p.m. July 12.

Foreman delivers drive in Yankees walk-off win over Red Stros in extra innings

Ryan Foreman's smash off the center field fence scored Jack Wu as the Yankees beat the Red Stros, 3-2 in extra innings Sunday at Kafer Park.

Teddy "rubber arm" Cardenas pitched six innings of relief a day after pitching a complete game, picking up his second win of the weekend. Cardenas, who tossed 119 pitches on Saturday and 69 on Sunday, gave up one earned run on six hits while striking out two and allowing an intentional walk

With runners on second and third in the bottom of the eighth , Red Stros pitcher Jayson Melendez intentionally walked Micah Caroon to load the bases and face Foreman. Foreman drilled a pitch off the centerfield fence for the walk-off win.

Melendez went the distance for the Red Stos, allowing three earned runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking three.

Noah Caroon went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored to lead the Yankees offense. Zach Bennett went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

The Red Stos were paced by Jacob Fink, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Dan Ventry went 2-for-3 with two singles.

The Red Stros, 2-2, visit the Cubs, 0-4, on at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 12. There are no games next week as the league observes the July 4th holiday. The Yankees, 3-1, host the Pirates, 3-1, at 7 p.m. July 12.

Father and son pitch, hit Braves past Cubs, 17-5

Jeffrey Small pitched a complete game and held the Cubs to five runs as the Braves picked up their first win of the season, 17-5 over the Cubs.

Jesse Small went 3-for-3 with a home run to pace the Braves offense. Kyle Dupas went 2-for-4 and Scott Cayton had a double, as the Braves offense put runners across the plate in every inning.

The Braves, 1-3, visit the Orioles at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 12. There are no games next week as the league observes the July 4th holiday. The Cubs, 0-4, host the Red Stros at 1 p.m. July 12.

Week 3: 6.27.2020

Hunter's diving catch, Vizcarrondo's timely hit leads Pirates to come-from-behind-win over Braves, 8-7

Nick Hunter saved a couple of run with a diving catch with the bases loaded in the sixth inning and Pirates scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge the Braves, 8-7, Saturday at Kafer Park.

Down by three going into the final inning, Ben MeinJohans and Xander Vizcarrondo singled and Dom Totten reached on an error. Lemuel Vizcarrondo's gap hit capped off the rally and gave relief pitcher Lawrence Davidson his first win of the season.

The Braves jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Pirates answered with three in the bottom half of the inning. The Braves added two in the fourth and two in the fifth, chasing Totten. Davidson pitched the final two scoreless innings.

Totten started the game for the Pirates, going four innings and striking out two. Michael Valentin and Tomas Hernandez each went 2-for-3 with two singles.

The Pirates improve to 2-1 on the season. They host the Orioles at 1 p.m. Sunday at Kafer Park. The Braves fall to 0-3 and host the Cubs at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Vanzandt, defense lead Orioles past Red Stros, 6-1

Kevin Vanzandt pitched a complete game to lead the Orioles to a 6-1 win in the battle of the unbeatens Saturday at Kafer Park.

The Orioles turned 16 walks from Red Stros pitchers into six runs to lead the offense. The Orioles also had six stolen bases in the game, two by Josh Edwards.

Three double plays helped the Orioles hold the Red Stros offence to one run.

The Orioles held a 2-1 lead until the sixth inning when they scored four insurance runs, highlighted by a Parker Mills hit, to help Vanzandt earn the win.

Alarie Elks pitched six innings for the Red Stros, limiting the Orioles to three hits but walking 10. Elks was relieved part of the way into the seventh inning by Kirk Williams.

Dan Ventry had two hits for the Red Stros. Austin Zehr, Joe Edreira, Elks and Wally Welbacher each had hits.

The Orioles improved to 3-0 and are the only remaining undefeated team. They visit the Pirates at 1 p.m. Sunday at Kafer Park The Red Stos fall to 2-1 on the season and visit the Yankees at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Cardenas, Foreman lead over Cubs, 19-4

Yankees 19, Cubs 4: Teddy Cardenas pitched a complete game and Ryan Foreman went 3-for-5 with a homerun and three RBI to lead the Yankees to a 19-4 win over the Cubs.

Cardenas tossed 119 pitches while allowing 12 hits and four runs.

Micah Caroon went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Chris Griffin went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Every Yankee hitter reached base safely at least once in the game.

The Yankees, 2-1 on the season, host the Red Stros at 7 p.m. tonight at Kafer Park. The Cubs, now 0-3, visit the Braves at 4 p.m.

Week 2: 6.21.2020

Foreman pitches complete game, homers in Yankees 5-1 win over Braves

Ryan Foreman pitched a four-hit complete game and homered to lead the Yankees over the Braves, 5-1, Sunday at Kafer Park.

The game turned in the bottom of the second when Foreman led off with a home run and Chris Griffin followed with a single. After a walk to Quentin Montemaro and a passed ball to Alex Bogdanoff, what should’ve been a double play was and thrown around the infield, allowing Griffin and Montemaro to score. The Braves got their sole run in the top of the seventh inning on singles by Jesse Small and Gage Spires.

Foreman gave up three hits while striking out seven and walking two. He went 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI. Micah Caroon went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Jeffrey Small pitched a complete game for the Braves, giving up five hits while striking out seven.

The Yankees improve to 1-1 on the season. The Braves fall to 0-2.

Byrnes, Melendez power Red Stros past Pirates

Dom Byrnes went 2-for-2 and scored two runs and Jayson Melendez hit two 2-run homers to lead the Red Stros to a 6-4 win over the Pirates Sunday at Kafer Park.

Bynes had two singles and reached base on a HBP. Melendez, who went 2-for-2 with a walk, hit a two-run homer in the first inning and another in the sixth inning. Dan Ventry and Chris Perry both had singles.

Defense kept the Pirates close. A diving two-out catch in the fourth inning by left fielder Dom Totten saved several runs.

Michael Pacacha picked up the win for the Red Stros. Melendez pitched four innings of relief and struck out six.

Tom Ireland started for the Pirates and was relieved by Ben Meijohans, who struck out seven. Alex Vicarrondo pitched the final two innings and recorded three strikeouts.

Alex Vicarrondo went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs. Lee Ashburn reach base three times on a single and two walks. Tomas Hernandez drove in a run.

The Red Stros are now 2-0 on the season. The Pirates drop to 1-1.

Solid defense backs up Whitford's five shutout innings as Orioles top Cubs, 5-0

J.P. Whitford pitched five shutout innings and the Orioles defense turned two double plays as the Orioles improved to 2-0 with a 5-0 win over the Cubs.

Whitford gave up four hits and two walks while picking up the win. Randy Mason and Josh Edwards each pitched an inning of relief.

Outfielder Ricky Henries saved a run with a two-out diving catch with a running on third.

Cubs starter Conn Blakley pitched four innings. Dave Schifano pitched two innings and Nick Cannon pitched the final frame.

The Orioles improve to 2-0 on the season. The Cubs fall to 0-2.

Week 1: 6.7.2020

Cherry's bomb leads Orioles over Yankees, 12-4

Orioles 12, Yankees 4 | Brandon Cherry hit a 2-run homer and Kevin Vanzandt kept Yankees hitters off balance as the Orioles beat the Yankees, 12-4, Sunday in a rematch of last season's championship game.

The Orioles jumped out to a four-run lead in the first inning, capped off by Cherry's 2-run homer. The Yankees tied the score in the top of the second, scoring all four of their runs on five consecutive singles.

But the Orioles took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, and the padded the lead with six runs in the fifth inning.

Cherry went 2-for-4 with a homer and a double to pace the Orioles. Austin Zehr went 3-for-3 with three singles, a walk and three runs scored. Vanzandt went 2-for-3 with a double, a single and a run scored.

Chris Griffin lead the offense for the Yankees, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Zach Bennett went 1-for-1 with a walk.

The Orioles, last season's ECABL champions, start the season 1-0 and will visit the Red Stros at 4 p.m. Sunday at Kafer Park. The Yankees, 0-1, will visit the Cubs at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Melendez leads Red Stros over Braves

Jayson Melendez hit a 3-run homer and held the Braves to two runs as the Red Stros topped the Braves, 6-2, Sunday at Kafer Park.

The Red Stros started off slow, trailing 2-0 early on, but shook off the rust in both team's first game of the season.

The Red Stros responded in the second inning with a Joe Edreira single and RBI double by Kade Ciraulo to cut the Braves lead in half.

Mike Zier, Gabriel Brown and Dan Ventry all recorded singles on the afternoon. Melendez struck out seven through four innings while picking up the win. Zier pitched in relief and Brown recorded the save.

Patrick Pipkin took the loss for the Braves.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Red Sox and Astros merged to give the league its sixth team, and they adopted the "Red Stros" name.

The Red Stros, 1-0, host Orioles next Sunday at 4 p.m. The Braves, 0-1, visit the Pirates at 1 p.m. next Sunday.

Ashburn leads Pirates over Cubs, 10-3, in shortened game

Lee Ashburn went 2-for-2 with 3 RBI to lead the Pirates over the Cubs, 10-3, in a darkness-shortened game Sunday night.

The nightcap lasted only five innings before one of the new lights at Kafer Park blew out, forcing the game to be shortened. All Pirates hitters reached base in the game.

The Pirates, 1-0, will host the Braves at 1 p.m. Sunday at Kafer Park. The Cubs, 0-1, will host the Yankees at 7 p.m. Sunday.
